HearAdvisor, an independent sound performance lab, recently launched its "HearAdvisor Expert Choice" badge, recognising selected hearing aids with outstanding quality and performance.
The Expert Choice badge was created to provide consumers with a simple and reliable way to identify the highest-quality hearing aids available in 2023.
How is Expert Choice determined?
This overall sound performance score summarises a hearing aid's performance across the following:
Speech quality in quiet and moderate noise environments
Performance in louder background noise and social settings
Connectivity and music streaming to your mobile phone
Feedback control
Own voice quality
HearAdvisor has measured most of the most popular hearing aids available in 2023, and the Expert Choice winners have achieved a SoundScore within 1 point of the best-observed score as of May 2023.
HearAdvisor is run by a group of two doctors of Audiology and one Ph.D. of hearing science. They are independently owned and passionate about their mission to provide hearing aid consumers with objective information to make informed purchases.
Abram from HearAdvisor has explained, "Coming up with a single number to quantify the overall sound performance of a hearing aid is super challenging. We leaned on the latest audiology and hearing science research to make realistic recordings and compute perceptually-validated metrics from the scientific literature. We even conducted our research to find which of our metrics were most important to consumers and audiology professionals. This helped us to create a composite score that captures the priorities of both groups."
Today, hearing aids with the highest SoundScore are awarded the 2023 HearAdvisor Experts Choice award.
As of May 2023, only 13 of 37 (35 %) tested products have achieved a SoundScore that wins the Expert Choice award.

Consumers can also listen to realistic recordings of all devices measured by HearAdvisor. HearAdvisor records each hearing aid in a range of realistic environments using its acoustic testing laboratory, presented with ambisonic reproduction in a semi-anechoic room and recorded on an industry-standard hearing manikin. The resulting binaural hearing aid audio recordings place the listener in 3D sound environments, allowing customers to preview hearing aids from their homes with just a pair of headphones.
