Blackdown Hearing is one of the only audiology specialists in Somerset offering a private earwax removal service without the need for a GP referral

Earwax can be an innocuous issue that causes a feeling of a blockage in the ear. However, it can also cause fatiguing symptoms such as hearing loss, vertigo, tinnitus, pain, discharge and infection. These symptoms can adversely affect your quality of life. In the UK, over 3 million people are estimated to have problems with impacted earwax annually.

We have seen in recent times that many GP surgeries in Somerset have begun removing this vital ear-cleaning treatment. We know that ears and hearing aids benefit from regular earwax removal, which is our main reason for adding this popular service.

We are clinically trained in all aspects of earwax removal, including:

  • Microsuction

  • Ear Syringing or Irrigation

  • Manual Extraction

This ensures we can use the correct procedure depending on your requirements.

Microsuction is our preferred method of earwax removal. In this procedure, your audiologist examines your ear using a powerful microscope. The microscope magnifies the ear, making it easier to assess and treat. It also enables your audiologist to view the delicate structures within your ear canals to ensure the whole procedure is completed safely and without discomfort.

A finely calibrated suction device cleans the ear without introducing any materials or using water. The gentle suction device works similarly to a vacuum cleaner, and although it can be quite noisy, it is quick and painless.

Microsuction is very well accepted by the majority of people, gives fast results, and can be much more effective than traditional earwax removal methods.

Syringing or irrigation is a more traditional method that uses water at body temperature gently ‘pulsed’ into the ear canal to remove earwax.

Manual extraction uses various fine, specially designed tools to remove the earwax safely. Your audiologist can see the ear canal through the magnified loupes as we complete this method.
